It's official!

"Thank you for registering for the 36th Marine Corps Marathon held on October 30, 2011"

Training begins in July! :)

Actually, training begins in June! Just put it all in my calendar! :)

A decision has been reached!

After much agonizing, and a flurry of emails, I reached a decision on which marathon will be my first full marathon.

But, wait, you didn't expect me to just tell you, did you??

I thought I would share the list of pros and cons first, so you could see how the decision-making process worked for me.

Marine Corps Marathon Pros
1. Registration is much cheaper
2. I can stay at my aunt and uncle's house, thus reducing expenses.
3. Uniformed Marine officer putting a medal around my neck
4. Strong ROTE presence
5. Running through the historic D.C. area

Marine Corps Marathon Cons
1. It's not Disney. :(
2. Training during the brutally hot Georgia summer/fall

Disney World Marathon Pros
1. It's Disney!!!
2. Getting to run through Animal Kingdom
3. Strong ROTE presence

Disney World Marathon Cons
1. Expensive registration
2. Expensive hotel
3. Expensive park tickets
4. Peak of training at Christmas time when I'm already so busy
5. 1st time jitters - not getting to really soak it all in for fear of not finishing (this happened at Princess 2010)

In the end, my practical side won out! Assuming I can get in to register today, my first full marathon will be the Marine Corps Marathon on October 30, 2011! :)

I will absolutely do the Walt Disney World Marathon sometime in my life, and hopefully sooner rather than later. And when I do, I know it will be the experience of a lifetime! But I am really looking forward to the Marine Corps Marathon this fall. Just 8 months away!

It's decision-time!

Today is a very important day. It's D-day. No more playing around - joking about my lack of ability to make a decision. I have run out of time!

Tomorrow, registration opens for the Marine Corps Marathon.

I have to decide by noon tomorrow if I am going to do MCM as my first marathon in October 2011 or if I'm going to go for the Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2012.

The pressure of the decision looms. Maybe I'll receive some revelation during my run this afternoon! After all, it's sunny and 65! :)

We are having a spring preview this week in the South, so I decided to take advantage of it! I needed to run in my costume for Princess next week, without the layers. I bought a new short sleeve shirt to put the ROTE logo on and it's been many months since I've run in a skirt by itself. Just in case this nice weather keeps up for 10 more days, I needed to give it a test run.

It was in the low 60s when I left the house. I think I probably could have run in a singlet instead of short sleeves. It was amazing, but my body was a bit confused. My legs felt so weird being "naked". LOL

I did around 4.3 miles and didn't have any problems. Planning about 6.5 for this weekend's long run, so I'll wear it again. Then it'll be time to wash it and pack it up for the trip! Can't believe it's so close!

Costume check

Yesterday I had 8 miles on my schedule - it was about 34 degrees out, with a windchill in the low to mid 20s. And when I went to get ready to go, I realized that all my long running pants were dirty. Since I was going to have to freeze anyway, I decided to wear my outfit for the Princess and see how it worked out! :) (Note that I did NOT wear the tutu to the park LOL)

Everything did great... capris with a C9 skirt over them, black long sleeve tech with the short sleeve white ROTE shirt. I wore a hoodie with it for the first lap, but I got surprisingly warm.

The weather is supposed to be warm here this week so I'm going to run in the afternoon one day to try the short sleeve shirt by itself (and possibly the skirt, too). I have purposely avoided the weather forecast for Florida so I don't obsess over it, but I think it would be a good idea to try out the shirt/skirt by itself in case I need to wear that during the race. Last year it was freezing cold for Princess and my outfit was designed for warm Florida weather. This year I planned something that was easily layered, but it's going to be hard to try it out "unlayered" with this brutal winter we've been having. I should be able to work it in this week, though!

Only 2 more weeks until Princess!!

Training Update

For those who didn't already know, I received a trip to the 2011 Disney Princess Half Marathon as a gift. I only had to pay for my meals and my park tickets!! This is such a huge blessing to me, and I'm so excited! I haven't officially trained for it which is why you haven't gotten official updates. After the Half Fanatics training, I decided to modify my training a bit to keep up that level of fitness.

It's been hard to not have an official training program to follow, but I basically kept up the pattern of the Penguin's half-marathon training program:

Monday - rest
Tuesday - run 4 miles
Wednesday - bike
Thursday - run 4 miles
Friday - swim
Saturday - long run
Sunday - bike

The long runs on Saturdays rotate between 5, 8, and 10 miles. It seems to be working just fine! I've had to make some adjustments due to our crazy weather this winter, and I had a knee problem a couple of weeks ago that required me to do a little more resting, but overall I've been following that pattern this winter. The two to go are the bike days because when it's bitterly cold, I just can't bring myself to ride outside. But the last few Sundays have seen highs around 50, and I can manage that!

I did my last 10 mile run for Princess last weekend. I actually ended up running my fastest 10 miles ever, and it was pretty exciting! I love how I am getting faster without really even trying. I do intend to incorporate some speed work and hills this spring, but for now, it's cool to see how it all falls into place with time!

I still haven't made up my mind about the full marathon yet, though I am leaning towards Disney. Strongly leaning towards Disney! LOL I have a little less than 2 weeks left before the Marine Corps Marathon opens for registration, so there is time. Right now it all boils down to money.

In other racing news, I sent off my registration for the 2011 Fallen Heroes of Georgia 10K! This is one of the 4 race that I have scheduled for 2011 (in addition to the Warrior Dash and the Triathlon that I registered and paid for last fall). I really wanted to sign up for the Run the Reagan Half Marathon next weekend, but I have to be good if I want to do the Disney Marathon trip! They will "run the Reagan" again next year, I'm sure. ::sigh:: I have to keep my eyes on the prize! It will be worth it!! :)

That's about all the news I have right now. Oh, I finished my costume for the Princess! Since I'm not buying any new running gear this year while I save for the trip (I will allow for replacing socks, shoes, bras, etc), I had to be creative! And this is what I came up with:

I think it turned out really cute! I used the traditional Disney colors and the Running of the Ears logo to make myself a ROTE princess! :) I really love the folks at ROTE, and how supportive and encouraging they are of runners of all abilities! This is my way of showing that I'm proud to be a part of the group, even though I haven't been able to participate more fully in the group activities! (If I go to Disney Marathon weekend, though - look out ROTErs! LOL). Our trip to Princess this year is going to be very short, like it was for the Disneyland Half, so I don't think I'll get to see anyone except on race day morning - but that's better than nothing!

Until next time... waddle on! :)
